Speaker: Rajarshi Mukherjee (Harvard University) 

Title: Inference for ATE & GLM's when 𝒑 𝒏 → 𝜹 ∈ (𝟎, ∞) 

Abstract: In this talk we will discuss statistical inference of average treatment effect in measured confounder settings as well as parallel questions of inferring linear and quadratic functionals in generalized linear models under high dimensional proportional asymptotic settings i.e. when 𝑝 𝑛 → 𝛿 ∈ (0, ∞) where 𝑝, 𝑛 denote the dimension of the covariates and the sample size respectively . The results rely on the knowledge of the variance covariance matrix Σ of the covariates under study and we show that whereas 𝑛- consistent asymptotically normal inference is possible for any 𝛿 by using method of moments type estimators that do not rely on estimating high dimensional nuisance parameters followed by a debiasing strategy. Without the knowledge of Σ we first develop 𝑛-consistent estimators by using simple estimators of Σ when 𝛿 < 1. Subsequently for 𝛿 ≥ 1 we develop consistent estimators of the quantities of interest and argue that 𝑛-consistent estimation might not be possible without further assumptions on Σ. Finally we verify our results in numerical simulations. This talk is based on joint work with Xingyu Chen and Lin Liu from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Biography: Rajarshi Mukherjee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor in the Division of Biostatistics at UC Berkeley following his time as a Stein Fellow in the Department of Statistics at Stanford University. He obtained his PhD in Biostatistics from Harvard University, advised by Prof. Xihong Lin. 
He is generally interested in understanding broad aspects of causal inference in observational studies in modern data settings with a focus on learning about fundamental challenges in the statistical analysis of environmental mixtures and their effects on the cognitive development of children and cognitive decline in aging populations. His research is also motivated by learning through applications in large-scale genetic association studies, developing statistical methods to quantify the effects of climate change on human health, and understanding the effects of homelessness on human health.

“Inspired and Outraged: The Making of a Feminist Physician” tells the story of Alice Rothchild's journey from 1950's good girl to irreverent, feisty, feminist obstetrician-gynecologist forging her own direction in the contradictory, sexist world of medicine. As a child who came of age in the turbulent 1960s, she was compelled to create a path in the often outrageous, male-dominated medical field, repeatedly finding herself to be a first: accepted into an ob-gyn residency, opening an all-woman practice, working with midwives, challenging the status quo, shaped by her early involvement with Our Bodies Ourselves. Rothchild's poems are steeped in the often-shocking history of medicine and the conflicted sexual politics of the second half of the twentieth century. More about Alice Rothchild

Alice Rothchild: Inspired and Outraged: The Making of a Feminist Physician Book Talk

Abstract:

This talk explores how patient-generated data from wearables, ambient devices, and digital health tools can transform the delivery and quality of individualized clinical care. Digital Biomarkers (DBx) and Digital Therapeutics (DTx) leverage AI to convert raw data into action, helping clinicians adjust treatments, patients manage conditions, and researchers understand differentiated outcomes. Successes in Parkinson’s management and metabolic interventions demonstrate the value of integrating these technologies into specific care pathways. However, to realize scalable and affordable benefits for patients, providers, and payers will require implementing hybrid care systems that optimize patient-clinician collaboration across conditions and episodes of care. 

Bio: 

Deborah Estrin is a Professor of Computer Science at Cornell Tech in New York City where she holds The Robert V. Tishman Founder's Chair, serves as the Associate Dean for Impact, and is an Affiliate Faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine. Her research interests are in digitally-enabled innovations that support patients and providers in optimizing clinical outcomes and quality of life. Estrin founded the Public Interest Technology Initiative (PiTech) at Cornell Tech, which promotes public impact as a component of students' training and future careers. Estrin was previously the Founding Director of the NSF Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) at UCLA; pioneering the development of mobile and wireless systems to collect and analyze real time data about the physical world.  Estrin's honors include: the IEEE Internet Award (2017), MacArthur Fellowship (2018), and the IEEE John von Neumann Medal (2022). She is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2007), the National Academy of Engineering (2009), and the National Academy of Medicine (2019).

You are invited to a two-session luncheon book club. The book we will be discussing is Assembling Tomorrow: A Guide to Designing a Thriving Future  by Scott Doorley and Carissa Carter. The dates for the book discussion are Friday, January 31 and Friday, February 28, from noon to 1:30pmEST. The book investigates the intangibles, the mysterious forces that contribute to the oﬀ-kilter feelings of today, and follows up with actionables to help you alter your perspective and ﬁnd opportunities in these turbulent times. Mixed throughout are histories of the future, short pieces of speculative ﬁction that illustrate how things go haywire and what might be in store if we don’t set them straight.

 

Each session will be interactive; we will discuss two chapters from the “Intangibles” section of the book and two chapters from the “Actionables” section:

 

January 31 from 12pm to 1:30pmEST will focus on chapters 1, 2, 5, and 6: Connections, Flow, Be Awkward, and Shapeshift.February 28 from 12pm to 1:30pmEST will focus on chapters 3, 4, 7, and 8: Feelings, Make-Believe, Disorient Yourself, and Aim for Imperfection. 

In November, MAD hosted a book launch of Assembling Tomorrow.  The presentation was captivating and sparked my interest in the book.  Why revisit a book we have already featured? To take the opportunity to dig a little deeper and benefit from the perspectives of others. Assembling Tomorrow is a fascinating read that is both a cautionary tale and an action plan for improved designs. We hope you can join us!

The Breakfast Series is a regular series from the MIT Women's League. Rhea Vedro leads fine metals instruction in The Merton C. Flemings Materials Processing Laboratory 4-006. Her courses include 3.093 Metalsmithing: Objects and Power, 3.095 Introduction to Metalsmithing, and MIT Morningside Academy for Design DesignPlus seminars. Vedro is a metalsmith creating at the intersection of art, materiality and healing. Her research explores metalsmithing as a cultural signifier of values, power and protection across belief-systems and time. Trained first as a jeweler, her current studio practice is primarily hollow-form steel sculpture. Before joining DMSE, Vedro was a Boston Public Art Triennial Accelerator Fellow and served as Director of Community Engagement with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Vedro taught metalsmithing at UW-Madison and SUNY New Paltz. Her project portfolio includes the City of Boston Mayor's Office of Arts + Culture, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Artisans Asylum, North Bennet Street School, Vizcaya Museum, Queens Museum, The New York City Parks Foundation, and museums, schools, and creative community spaces throughout the Americas. Vedro holds an MFA in Metalsmithing from SUNY New Paltz.

Drawing from archival work in a half dozen countries, Professor Bateman will discuss how the United States has leveraged allies since the Cold War to secure access to vital real estate abroad that enables it to project power through space. In analyses of space competition, scholars and policy experts have focused on activities in orbit and neglected the global terrestrial infrastructure necessary for military and civilian space operations. MITdesignX seeks diverse, interdisciplinary teams working on challenging ideas with clear vision, passion and drive to design solutions and launch a real venture.  Applications go through a rigorous selection process that reviews ideas based on human, environmental and social impact, feasibility, uniqueness, and scalability as well as team composition, diversity and skillset.

Up to 12 teams are selected for each cohort. Applicants can include graduate students, researchers, staff and faculty members from across MIT, as well as their colleagues from other institutions or industry.
