Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force across various industries, reshaping the way businesses operate and societies function. Despite its potential benefits, AI also brings forth a myriad of legal and ethical considerations that demand attention. As AI continues to evolve and penetrate diverse sectors, it becomes more important to think through legal compliance, risk management, governance, and intellectual property rights. Navigating the AI legal landscape will allow us to leverage AI’s transformative potential while mitigating potential harms.

​In exploring the intersection of AI and legal compliance, the workshop will address the following key areas:

​•              Defining AI: An introduction to AI technologies and associated benefits and risks.

​•              AI Compliance and Risks: Legal obligations and risks associated with use of AI.

​•              AI Governance: Considerations regarding governing development, deployment, and management of AI.

​•              IP, Copyright, and Authorship: IP rights and protection of AI systems; ownership of AI-generated innovations.

​Moreover, as AI extends its reach into various domains, including life sciences applications such as drug discovery and clinical trials, questions arise regarding its practical use cases and implications. Can AI generate copyrighted or patented materials? What are the key risks associated with AI utilization, and how can they be effectively managed? These are some of the critical topics that will be explored in an interactive session, including audience Q&A, to foster a deeper understanding of AI's role and responsibilities in the legal and ethical landscape.

​Ariel Soiffer is a partner at WilmerHale’s Boston office, where he focuses on technology transactions and related advice. He has extensive AI experience, including in life sciences, financial, audiovisual content, medical support and forestry, among many other applications. ABSTRACT

Since the demise of Dennard scaling, modern computer has largely relied on architectural innovations such as multi-core processors and GPUs vs CPUs to address the evolving needs of computing paradigm. This problem has been exacerbated since computing has largely evolved from arithmetic centric to data centric in the age of billions of internet-connected devices and artificial intelligence. Thus, dense and reliable data storage combined with fast and high bandwidth access in novel memory devices has become the frontier for research in modern computing hardware.

 

There have been several advancements across a variety of technologies in the past three decades. Ferroelectric materials and devices are among the forefront of these technologies due to their low-power and fast switching abilities, but suffer from integration challenges. Simultaneously, developing data-heavy computing architectures in extreme environments is a growing need and a frontier challenge since silicon carbide (SiC), which is the leading logic technology for elevated temperature environments, is limited by computing power and lack of memory devices that can operate at elevated temperatures. 

 

In this talk, Jariwala will make the case of how novel III-nitride materials might present interesting avenues to overcome some of the above limitations being faced by both silicon and silicon carbide (SiC) hardware. He will present ongoing and recent work on integration of 2D chalcogenide semiconductors emerging wurtzite structure ferroelectric nitride materials[1] namely aluminum scandium nitride (AlScN).

 

First, Jariwala will present on Ferroelectric Field Effect Transistors (FE-FETs) made from 2D materials when integrated with AlScN and make the case for 2D semiconductors in this application.[2-4] He will then show recent results on scaling 2D/AlScN FE-FETs, achieving ultra-high carrier and current densities[5] in ferroelectrically gated MoS2 and also demonstrate negative-capacitance FETs[6] by engineering the AlScN/dielectric/2D interface. 

 

Then, Jariwala will introduce the ferroelectric diode (FeD) memory device[7] and demonstrate multi-bit operation[8] as well as compute in memory (CIM)[9] using FeD devices made from AlScN. Finally, he will demonstrate why AlScN FeDs are uniquely suited as a high temperature non-volatile memory demonstrating stable operation up to 600 C[10] and how AlScN can be integrated onto SiC[11] for stable data retention in ferroelectric capacitors up to 800 C.[12] He will end by providing a broad outlook on both AI computing hardware as well as high-temperature computing.[13]

BIOGRAPHY

Deep Jariwala is an associate professor and the Peter & Susanne Armstrong Distinguished Scholar in the Electrical and Systems Engineering as well as Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). Jariwala completed his undergraduate degree in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Varanasi and his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering at Northwestern University. Jariwala was a Resnick Prize Postdoctoral Fellow at Caltech before joining Penn to start his own research group. His research interests broadly lie at the intersection of new materials, surface science and solid-state devices for computing, opto-electronics and energy harvesting applications in addition to the development of correlated and functional imaging techniques.

 

Jariwala’s research has been widely recognized with several awards from professional societies, funding bodies, industries as well as private foundations, the most notable ones being the Optica Adolph Lomb Medal, the Bell Labs Prize, the AVS Peter Mark Memorial Award, IEEE Photonics Society Young Investigator Award, IEEE Nanotechnology Council Young Investigator Award, IUPAP Early Career Scientist Prize in Semiconductors, the SPIE Early career achievement award and the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship. He has published over 150 journal papers with more than 22000 citations and holds several patents. He serves as the Associate Editor for ACS Nano Letters and has been appointed as a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Nanotechnology Council for 2025.

Title: Predictive principles of motor behavior: costs, controllers, and learning rules


Abstract: The best current robots still fall short of the efficiency and safety guarantees exhibited by human motor behavior. One way to understand this superior performance is to develop computational models that predict how humans select, execute, and learn everyday movements. My talk will highlight the predictive principles of safe and efficient motor behavior we've uncovered over the years: the cost functions, controller structures, and learning rules. These principles will provide a blueprint for engineering human-like performance in wearable and autonomous robots.

 

Nidhi Seethapathi is a Frederick A. (1971) and Carole J. Middleton Career Development Assistant Professor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. Her group builds predictive models to help understand human sensorimotor control using a combination of theory, computational modeling, and experiments. Previously, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at University of Pennsylvania developing data-driven tools for neuromotor rehabilitation. She obtained her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University, where she was a Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellow.

Five hundred years ago, people sought to understand the mysterious, half-seen creatures that lurked beneath the ocean's surface. Today, researchers hunt for ways to visualize black holes and the ocean floor. 

In search of answers to this question, join astrophysicist Erin Kara, sonar pioneer Martin Klein, and exhibition curators Elisabeth (Libby) Meier and Florencia Pierri, for a discussion on seeing and understanding the unknown across scientific disciplines. The panel will be followed by an opportunity to visit the Monsters of the Deep exhibition.

MITdesignX Pitch/Demo 2025

Speaker/ Moderator: Manish Bharadwaj, Ph.D.

Manish directs Keller Center's Design for Innovation program for faculty in the humanities and social sciences. He was previously the James Wei Visiting Professor at Keller, where he taught idealism in entrepreneurship. Manish is the CEO and co-founder of Innovators In Health, which is devoted to delivering world-class healthcare to the rural poor in India. Manish is also a Fellow of the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at MIT. Manish believes that a venture to make the world more just is fundamentally a moral, not technical, undertaking. It requires cultivating a moral imagination, an ability to imagine why people do right or wrong, the root of empathy, itself the root of all enduring change. He believes that accompaniment, to stand with the marginalized, literally and figuratively, is a moral imperative, and in and of itself a powerful means of change.

Student Roundtable: Can Social Change-makers make the World Just?

MITdesignX seeks diverse, interdisciplinary teams working on challenging ideas with clear vision, passion and drive to design solutions and launch a real venture.  Applications go through a rigorous selection process that reviews ideas based on human, environmental and social impact, feasibility, uniqueness, and scalability as well as team composition, diversity and skillset.

Up to 12 teams are selected for each cohort. Applicants can include graduate students, researchers, staff and faculty members from across MIT, as well as their colleagues from other institutions or industry.

Participants receive a 10K seed grant, 18 credits, workspace, and mentoring. Apply here now!
