Automating clean energy incentives and regulations

Idea in Climate Tech

Introduction

Nearly $500 billion in public funding will be invested in clean energy over the next 10 years across 2,500+ different federal, state, and local programs. 1Climate’s mission is to become the go-to platform for clean energy developers to navigate this complex web of policies and incentive programs. By streamlining the regulatory, contracting, and permitting process, we will reduce project soft costs and accelerate clean energy project deployment.

Problem

While the IRA and other recent legislation are expected to direct $500 billion in federal expenditures towards clean energy in the medium term, the industry is currently facing temporary headwinds as it awaits the publication of IRS and Treasury guidance on program rules. Moreover, the complex web of policies and incentive programs between the federal, state, and local levels can be even more challenging to navigate. Current larger scale projects can cost upward of $30k in regulatory consulting fees to navigate these complexities. These issues both drive up costs and delay project timelines.

Opportunity

1Climate’s value proposition is to provide convenient, easy, and regularly updated data that saves developers time and overhead. Moreover, we offer automation of the permitting and incentive application process, as well as automation of contracting. Our initial target customers are C&I solar developers, and we plan to expand to support residential/utility-scale solar developers, ESCOs, and building owners. By providing these solutions, we aim to make the clean energy development process more efficient and cost-effective for our customers.

Our product is an energy regulatory information processing system that utilizes advanced natural language processing techniques to extract relevant and usable information from unstructured text documents. The system runs on a custom-trained large language model that can parse through vast amounts of regulatory information to identify relevant pieces of data. The system then structures this data in a query-able format and places it behind an API that can feed other data systems such as CRMs, modeling tools, and project management platforms. This API will combine cutting-edge ML search techniques like semantic embeddings with the latest in transformer network models for NLU, creating a system with novel understanding and recall functionalities.

Furthermore, our system will automate the filing of these documents, abstracting the entire regulatory component of the developer process. This will allow our customers to save time and overhead costs associated with navigating complex regulatory environments.
