Drug discovery is an extremely slow and costly process, and it often takes decades and billions of dollars for life-saving therapies to reach patients. Before a drug enters clinical trials, it needs to be validated for efficacy and safety through careful experiments, called assays, first in vitro (in test tubes), then in cells, and finally in animal models. Assay development is a painstaking process that involves many months of combing through the scientific literature in search of protocols, adapting those protocols to the current project, and tweaking assay conditions many times until it works.
