Attune

Your perspective. Your language. Your clarity.

Idea in Artificial Intelligence

Introduction

Everyone expresses emotion differently: engineers reason through metaphors, immigrants switch between cultural lenses, high-stress professionals use rational-speak when they’re overwhelmed. Attune listens for your worldview, your linguistic rhythms, your emotional logic, and responds in a way that feels natural, familiar, and safe.

Problem

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used in emotionally charged contexts, such as burnout, interpersonal conflict, and self-reflection, but they often respond with a generic, therapy-like register. Sociolinguistic research (eg., Gordon et al., 2024) shows that LLMs behave as models of varieties of language: their outputs are shaped by the social groups, registers, and discourse styles embedded in their training data.

This creates a critical mismatch. When users communicate using niche sociolects, such as the distinct rational-emotional discourse common among engineers, graduate students, or tech workers, LLMs often misinterpret intentions, flatten emotional nuance, or respond with generic, therapy-like advice. Different communities have distinct linguistic worlds, identities, emotional frameworks, and communication norms. When AI systems fail to interpret these styles, their responses feel misaligned, alienating, or even unsafe.

I first noticed this when supporting a close friend: the only insights that actually landed were the ones expressed in his metaphors, his worldview, his way of making sense of emotion. That moment clarified the deeper problem: people are not emotionally supported unless they are understood in their own linguistic world.

Opportunity

Attune adapts to the sociolect of its user and creates a low-risk live user embedding centered on meaning-making, not demographics. Attune will:

Detect the user’s sociolect, making inferences about the user’s cultural background cues, stylistic markers, reasoning style, emotional logic, and discourse patterns

Adapt the AI’s reasoning and tone to the sociolect

Translate rational thought into emotional clarity, helping users articulate feelings in their own conceptual vocabulary

With protective guardrails for cultural competence and safety, the system provides emotionally attuned, non-therapeutic support that feels natural, accessible, and deeply personalized. This is AI that finally understands not just what you say, but the worldview you’re saying it from.
