Bolso is a financial empowerment platform designed to unlock financial peace of mind for undocumented immigrants in the United States, starting with Latino day laborers in the East Coast. By addressing the unique challenges faced by this community, Bolso offers savings and investment mechanisms, as well as pre-approved credit lines tailored to their needs. Bolso aims to build financial stability and a path to a better future, creating value by "cream-skimming" a segment that's financially reliable but overlooked by the traditional financial system.
Problem
There are 13 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., many of whom are day laborers, facing systemic barriers to financial inclusion. Despite their reliability, they struggle with loan approvals because their borrower profiles are penalized for not having a fixed income from a single employer. They are excluded from social benefits due to a lack of a social security number and feel disempowered to build wealth. While they can open investment accounts using their ITIN numbers, which allow them to build credit and access credit cards, limited financial knowledge and significant language barriers make it overwhelming to explore available options and determine whom to trust. This exclusion leaves them financially vulnerable, without a safety net for unexpected expenses or long-term goals like retirement.
Opportunity
Bolso provides a savings-driven alternative credit solution, enabling customers to build creditworthiness while earning a competitive return on their savings. After six months of consistent saving, users gain access to pre-approved credit lines for essential expenses like medical or educational needs. Bolso also plans to introduce retirement investment products, offering immigrants a viable path to financial security and stability in the U.S. Bolso team members also have invested in a strategic partnership with startup BYDcash, which through alternative lending, partners with immigration lawyers to provide immigrants with the financing required to fund their documentation process. Bolso intends to partner with BYDcash to unlock a path towards a documented future for their client base.
