Idea in Education
Introduction
We are developing Eyedeate, a syntax-less interface that delivers an intuitive coding experience by relying on principles of programming by demonstration. Utilizing cutting-edge HCI research, our technology will empower users to express their creativity, and create a future where coding is accessible to all.
Problem
Countless people, both children and adults, are deterred from venturing into the world of programming because learning to code traditionally requires mastery of complex syntax . This steep learning curve limits diversity in tech and stifles innovation. As of 2022, only 53% of U.S. high schools offered any CS course at all, and ⅓ of U.S. workers lacked digital skills; minority and low-income groups are also underrepresented. However, the act of giving instructions (programming), and trial-and-error (debugging) are intuitive to most, and thus thinking programmatically should be an attainable skill. The problem is that current programming interfaces require the audience to learn unintuitive syntax, and interact with clunky interfaces. There is a chasm between systematic thinking and the translation of these thoughts into compilable code. Bridging this gap allows us to democratize coding education, and empower everyone to create, share, and thrive in an increasingly tech-driven world.
Opportunity
We are developing Eyedeate, a syntax-less interface that delivers an intuitive coding experience by relying on principles of programming by demonstration. Instead of getting bogged down by syntax hurdles, our solution relies on the power of visual rules, which have been proven to be easily understood by all audiences. Utilizing cutting-edge HCI research, and well-tested visual rule interfaces, we will create a platform that allows anyone, regardless of age or prior coding knowledge, to effortlessly create games, educational simulations, and applications. With our platform, kids and adults alike can dive into programming without the barrier of learning complex syntax rules. Instead of spending months on a computer science course, our audience can spend five minutes exploring Eyedeate's graphical interface, and then spend the next weeks bringing their project vision to real life. Our technology empowers users to express their creativity, share their ideas, and turn them into reality.
