Medly

Personalized Medication, Safer World

Idea in Health Care

Introduction

A few years ago, I witnessed a close friend become paralyzed for three minutes after taking Tylenol. He was unaware of his acetaminophen allergy, highlighting how even a common OTC drug can have severe consequences. This experience made me realize the urgent need for safer medication use.

The U.S., leading the world in OTC drug consumption with over 300,000 medications available, faces persistent safety challenges. Despite FDA guidelines, some drugs bypass thorough safety reviews, increasing risks for consumers. My user research with 50 participants revealed that both Americans and immigrants often lack sufficient knowledge about the drugs they take, especially with limited access to healthcare. This often leads people to purchase OTC drugs without professional guidance, increasing the potential for harmful interactions or overdoses.

Medly aims to fill this gap by offering personalized recommendations based on users’ conditions, allergies, and past medications, ensuring safer OTC use and reducing health risks.

Problem

Every year, 1.3 million emergency visits and 350,000 hospitalizations occur due to OTC overdoses or dangerous drug interactions in the U.S., which leads the world in OTC consumption with over 300,000 available medications. After COVID, medication use has surged, yet many consumers lack clear criteria when choosing drugs. Limited healthcare access often forces people to buy OTC medications without guidance, waiting up to 30 minutes for pharmacist consultations. Even then, sharing personal health histories and past medications is often impractical. This lack of personalized guidance poses serious risks, as some medications can cause severe outcomes, such as paralysis, when misused.

Opportunity

Medly offers a comprehensive, personalized solution for safe OTC drug use. Users first register their previously taken medications, allowing the app to identify any ingredients that have caused adverse reactions. When users select symptoms, Medly provides a list of potential medications, highlighting those that align with the user’s medical history.

Leveraging the legally mandated transparency of drug ingredients, Medly clearly distinguishes between medications that are safe and those that could pose risks. The app also calculates safe dosing intervals, ensuring appropriate gaps between existing medications and new ones taken for emerging symptoms. Additionally, Medly prioritizes drugs that have been effective for users in the past, offering weighted recommendations to enhance safety and reliability.
