NitroMax is an integrated software solution that will help farmers optimize fertilizer application to minimize nitrogen loss and reduce fertilizer costs.
Nitrogen fertilizer has been widely used by farmers for decades. Because the fertilizer has historically been cheap and easy to use, farmers choose to apply more nitrogen fertilizer than their plants will typically absorb as a form of insurance against crop failure. Nearly half of fertilizer used every year is not absorbed by plants but lost to runoff into groundwater, pollution, or nitrous oxide emissions (a greenhouse gas 300x more impactful than CO2). Nitrogen fertilizer waste results in 80% of human emissions of nitrous oxide (~2.5 gigatons), and the loss of about two thirds of the nearly $100B of nitrogen fertilizer spread on fields.
Current trends make this an attractive problem to tackle:
- Rising fertilizer prices (up 300% YoY) and supply shortages have caused farmers to reevaluate their farming techniques
- Passage of the Inflation Reduction Act increases funding for farming nutrient outreach and education while incentivizing payments for nutrient management planning and implementation
- Increasing awareness among farmers of precision and climate smart agriculture
We are developing a one-stop-shop dashboard that integrates data from soil sensors, climate forecasts, and field topology to accurately forecast and reduce fertilizer requirements for farmers.
