Spheric Bio

Shaping the future of personalized medical devices, inside the human body

Idea in Administrative Services

Introduction

Spheric Bio - an early preclinical stage medical device company spinning out of MIT and Harvard - is developing a platform to create personalized medical implants directly inside the human body. Our initial focus is on left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. We are pioneering a new approach to medical device design and delivery, moving beyond 'one-size-fits-all' solutions to create truly patient-specific implants within the human body.

Problem

Millions of people with atrial fibrillation (AFib) are at high risk of stroke and rely on lifelong blood thinners or on LAAO devices to reduce this risk. However, current LAAO devices are pre-fabricated in limited sizes and shapes, often leading to incomplete occlusion, peri-device leaks, and other complications due to the fundamental mismatch between the device and the patient's unique LAA anatomy. These complications can increase stroke risk and necessitate further interventions.

Opportunity

The emuLAAte system leverages a catheter-based approach to deliver and assemble modular biomaterial components within the patient's appendage, enabling on-demand production of soft implants that conform precisely to each individual's anatomy. This in situ manufacturing approach eliminates the geometric and mechanical mismatch of current devices and flexibly adapts to each patient's unique anatomy, thereby offering a safer, more effective, and simpler LAAO procedure. Long-term, our platform aims to revolutionize healthcare in the cardiovascular space and beyond, offering personalized solutions right at the point of care through a minimally-invasive procedure.
