Most small business owners will only sell a business once. They have no comparable experience to draw on, no reliable way to know what their business is worth, and no neutral starting point. What they do have is a number in their head, one built from decades of sacrifice rather than market data, and that number is almost always wrong. Faced with offers that do not match their expectations, many owners disengage entirely. They pass the business to their family, hoping someone else will figure it out. The difficulty of the exit process is not a side effect of the problem. It is the problem.
We hope to build a marketplace to connect the business selllers and buyers, as well as tools for them to minimize friction and maximize gains. The long-term objective is not simply to build a marketplace. It is to build the foundational infrastructure for disciplined capital allocation in the lower middle market, a layer of the economy that moves billions of dollars annually but operates with almost no price discovery or data standardization.
