VisionRoad.ai is a startup spin out of MIT leveraging AI, photogrammetry, and LiDAR to revolutionize roadway pavement marking detection, diagnostics, classification, and conditional assessment. Our solutions are designed for cities, state highways, and airfields, automating the traditionally manual and labor-intensive process of pavement marking analysis. As part of our technology R&D, we are developing advanced algorithms for retro-reflectivity calculation using LiDAR data, a critical metric for assessing visibility and safety standards of pavement markings.
About the Role
Position: R&D Intern – Retro-Reflectivity Algorithm Development Location: Remote Duration: IAP and possible extension in the spring, with flexible start date and hours Responsibilities: • Develop and optimize algorithms for retro-reflectivity calculation using LiDAR point cloud data. • Analyze the relationship between LiDAR intensity returns, incident angles, and material properties of pavement markings. • Integrate retro-reflectivity with handheld retro-reflectometer datasets to improve accuracy and reliability. • Validate and benchmark algorithm performance using real-world aerial LiDAR and drone-collected datasets. • Document findings and contribute to technical knowledge base. Preferred Qualifications: • Current undergraduate or graduate student in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field at MIT. • Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or C++ with experience in LiDAR data processing libraries (e.g., PCL, Open3D). • Familiarity with AI/ML techniques for signal processing and computer vision. • Knowledge of photogrammetry principles and 3D point cloud analysis. • Experience working with geospatial tools (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) is a plus. • Passion for transportation and infrastructure technology.
