About the Role
ABOUT THE ROLE At DSV we’re looking for future Founders, entrepreneurially minded individuals with industry-specific technical and commercial domain expertise eager to solve urgent unmet challenges through venture building. You will be applying to become the first founder, in order to lead the spin-out of a new company at Deep Science Ventures. It will involve scoping the idea, hiring a team and gaining traction. You will join DSV’s venture creation programme as a Founder in Residence and work closely with the DSV team, using , to spin-out a new company. During the programme, you’ll work on all aspects related to venture creation in this opportunity area, including working out the optimal approach to solve for the desired outcome, building a team and building a viable business case. Once the new venture is incorporated with pre-seed investment from DSV, you and your co-founders will own the majority stake in the business and continue receiving support from the DSV team post-spinout. THE CHALLENGE YOU'LL BE SOLVING Ancient and remarkably versatile, 2 billion tonnes of steel is manufactured a year, requiring some of humanity's most complex engineering. It makes up critical parts of our buildings, cars, ships, machinery, factories, bridges, appliances and more. Meanwhile, producing it from raw iron ore burns 1 billion tonnes of coal, emitting around 3.5 billion tonnes of CO2 into our atmosphere each year. An equivalent sum of CO2 to all the exhaust fumes of every flight on Earth, four times over. Bringing this CO2 emissions number to zero is essential for avoiding climate change. There are three methods of attack: - Switch off as many polluting plants as we can, in other words, reduce or substitute demand for steel - Change facilities that already exist to become carbon neutral through fuels, or capturing emissions - Build new plants using novel technologies to create a new best-in-class technology - The first route has limited potential and might be better solved by regulations, the second route suffers from difficulties in plant shutdown, high-volume carbon sourcing and retrofit complexity; the third route of fully renewable steelmaking offers the most promise. Partial electrification is already possible; 25% of steel is produced via Electric Arc Furnaces with many new technologies such as Hydrogen DRI, Molten Electrolysis and Alkaline Electrolysis undergoing development. Yet, with current technologies direct emissions continue to be high because fossil carbon is still used for slag foaming, anode construction or rapid process heating. Next to that, indirect emissions have not been solved, as running continuous processes of steel making using intermittent renewable energy sources would depend on expensive energy storage. Electric ironmaking is facing significant challenges across the space, from energy storage for renewable power to sourcing high quality net-zero alternative carbon and utilising low-quality iron ores. OUR APPROACH In an ideal future we would want a steel plant that is fully compatible with intermittent renewable electricity and heat and ensure steelmaking uses fully-renewable carbon sources for alloying. Some of the options to do this, are to commercialise and integrate renewable heating, medium-temperature processes, alternative energy storage systems, and alternative carbon sources such as biochar and CO2 graphitisation. We also need to find ways to process low grade ores and find cheaper chemical reductants. We have some ideas, but it will ultimately be down to you to determine the best commercial and technical route forward! Requirements: - We are looking for an entrepreneurial and urgently motivated person who has a strong drive to solve some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges - PhD or equivalent industry expertise in metallurgical engineering, material sciences, process design, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or a relevant field; - We are especially interested in candidates with a good understanding or work experience in at least one of the following: metals processing technologies such as smelting of metals, electric arc furnaces, thermal or electrolysis processing of metal oxides; - Experience with the development of novel electrochemical and/or thermochemical cell and reactor design is a plus; - You have a broad knowledge base to draw upon and an passion in keeping up-to-date with the latest technologies; - You are a creative thinker, enjoy thinking about the exceptions to rule, and enjoy a good challenge; - You have a strong desire to build a company and ideally have built projects and teams in the past. You are a good communicator and work well in a team.

CTO & Co-Founder, Marine Swarm Robotics at Marble
CTO & Co-Founder, Marine Swarm Robotics at Marble
About the Company/Team:
The Problem: Ocean Data Intelligence For Climate The ocean is on the frontline of climate change. It is the largest carbon sink on the planet, absorbing a quarter of our emissions and regulating global weather patterns. At the same time, climate change is making oceans warmer, more acidic, and depleted of oxygen, threatening marine ecosystems and food security for billions. The ocean is also the next frontier of climate solutions. Much of the world’s food demand could be met with sustainable seafood and seaweed cultivation. Offshore wind and marine power could provide 20 times the global electricity demand, and are expected to grow 50-100x by 2050. Marine carbon removal (mCDR) is one of few CDR approaches that could reach the multi gigaton scale required for net zero. Marine genomics and metagenomics could unlock tremendous value for bio-based materials and biotechnology. Monitoring ocean health and growing a trillion $ regenerative blue economy will both require rapidly scalable ocean intelligence systems. However, while the oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, only 5% have been thoroughly explored to date. This is in part due to cost, difficulty and limit of operation of current marine data collection systems. As a result, many parts of the worlds’ ocean that are potential sites for climate solutions lack necessary and crucial baseline data to make informed decisions and create the best approaches. The Opportunity We are developing a breakthrough ocean data intelligence solution to provide scalable baseline data collection for critical marine industries — fisheries and aquaculture, marine renewable energy, biodiversity and marine genetic resources, marine protected areas (MPAs) assessment, and MRV (measurement, reporting, verification) for marine CDR. A key part of our solution is the operationalization of coordinated underwater vehicles and its related data analysis. We leverage major advancements on the scientific and technical fronts, combined with a custom networking stack for various applications. We are looking for a stellar individual to join as Co-Founder & CTO. The project is led by an exceptional CEO and Co-Founder, a marine robotics engineer with experience building autonomous marine systems, strengthening strong relationships with the right stakeholders, and deep exposure in climate tech and marine ecosystems. Key commercial and technical concepts have been de-risked, but there is a lot of room for technical creativity: we are super early! The CTO and Co-Founder position is broad. You will work closely with the CEO & scientific advisors to de-risk key technical aspects of the project and develop a scalable technology platform that can be deployed across multiple sites. The CTO role will be responsible for leading the technical development of the project, specifically on the hardware and software robotics stack. This process will be complemented by customer acquisition & marine robotics background of the CEO, the scientific expertise of our close advisors, & key first technical hires. The startup will be located partly in Germany (CEO) and in the US (East Coast NYC or Boston area, preferably). The CTO will be required to be full-time at the US location. We welcome both local and international applicants interested to relocate (we can help with this!).
About the Role
Ideal Background(s) If you are a mission-driven individual with a passion for ocean technology and climate action, with experience in one of the areas below, we would love to hear from you! Robotics engineer with experience in design of embedded, software or control systems, ideally knowledge of marine robotics applications such as floats, AUVs, ROVs or other underwater systems OR Software engineer with applied experience in network intelligence, path planning and multi vehicle coordination Nice to have: Experience and expertise on marine and underwater environments, experience at sea Experience leading a technical team from prototype to serial deployment International career, project management experience, navigating complex regulatory environments, team management & community engagement.

And almost none of the existing efforts make use of the other great leap of our century – technology. Project Us uses the power of Artificial Intelligence and advanced bio-signal processing to help people grow into more inclusive leaders and organizations make tangible progress towards building more diverse cultures.

Event Assistant (Part-Time) at The Engine
Event Assistant (Part-Time) at The Engine
About the Company/Team:
The Engine, which was publicly announced on October 26, 2016, was built by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prioritizing breakthrough ideas over early profit, The Engine represents an exciting new system for startup support, one that shortens the time from idea to investment, and from investment to impact. To fuel The Engine, MIT is seeking to attract hundreds of millions of dollars of support and to provide hundreds of thousands of square feet of space for entrepreneurs in Kendall Square and nearby communities, starting with 26,000 square feet in its Central Square headquarters. The Engine provides a physical space where an idea can begin to take shape. It also streamlines the legal processes and agreements required to get products to market. And it links entrepreneurs to “patient capital” from investors who share their vision of addressing big challenges with big ideas. The Engine will eventually support up to 60 locally based startups concurrently; these companies will participate in the accelerator for up to 12 months. The Engine will make meaningful investments that will allow participating startups to get off the ground quickly and operate long enough to prove their concepts’ viability. It will also provide business planning, legal, and administrative support. The Engine will require less equity than is typical, allowing founders to maintain more control over their companies and the ideas they’ve created. Through the Engine Room, The Engine will provide access to a wide network of lab space, specialized equipment, business guidance, and other resources, at MIT and beyond.
