Rich Miner Bio: 
Rich is advising and investing in a number of startups from his AngelFund exvc and with AI investment firm FactorialFunds.  He has a new Stealth GenAI start-up in Cambridge launching its first product later this year. He is half time at Google where he helps leadership evolve their platforms for a future AI-enabled world.  He has been at Google since the acquisition of his startup Android which he co-founded and helped grow into the world's most popular operating system. After launching Android, Rich helped start and build GV (Google Ventures) into a world class venture capital fund. Rich's previous company, Wildfire, built the first voice based personal assistant - a predecessor to Alexa and Google Home - which was sold to Orange where he stayed on for five years as VP of Innovation. Rich also helped start Avid Technology which created the first non-linear computer based video editing system receiving both technical Oscar and Emmy awards and going public in 1993.

Rich received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and the University recently formed their new School of Computer and Information Science in his name.  He splits his time between Cambridge and Maine and is an active angel investor with his fund exvc.

The MITdesignX venture accelerator holds its 8th annual pitch and demo day to showcase the newest startups emerging from this transdisciplinary program at the MIT Morningside Academy for Design.

MITdesignX Pitch and Demo 2024

12 new startups emerge from MITdesignX this year.

We start off Pitch and Demo Day at 2pm, giving the live audience a chance to meet with the teams and see their new products and services. A lunch buffet will be served.

At 3pm, we begin our presentations with a recap of the year at MITdesignX and pitches by all the new startups. This segment of the day will be hybrid and livestreamed online to a global audience.

MITdesignX Pitch and Demo Day 2024

We don’t buy furniture anymore; we consume it. Every year, millions of tons of furniture items are sent to landfills while more are made to replace them. The furniture industry contributes 2% to global CO2-equivalent emissions, which is at least as much as the aviation industry. Designer and climate tech entrepreneur Andrea Quiros-Balma talks about the ways technology can be used to decarbonize this industry and change the way we shop for durable goods. Avenues for more sustainable futures will consider carbon accounting, digital twins, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and image recognition in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of goods.

In honor of the Foundation’s co-founder, Kuggie Vallee, and in order to inspire young women to continue a career in science, the Vallee Foundation has established a prestigious annual series of Kuggie Vallee Distinguished Lectures. These Lectures are designed to highlight major successes made by women in the biomedical sciences and are given at institutions around the world where Vallee Visiting Professors and Young Investigator Awardees are affiliated. The Kuggie Vallee Distinguished Lecturer gives a public lecture about her own science and, over a period of several days, meets more informally or in workshops with other faculty at the host institute to talk about women in science and career building.
